Dr. Cassandra Volpe Horii currently serves as the Associate Vice Provost for Education and Director of CTL Program Support at Stanford University. With a rich background in both academia and administration, Dr. Horii has made significant contributions to the advancement of teaching and learning practices across various disciplines.
Dr. Horii's academic journey commenced with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics from the University of Colorado at Boulder, followed by a Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Science from Harvard University. Her scholarly pursuits have traversed diverse fields, ranging from atmospheric science and environmental chemistry to expository writing and sustainability.
Throughout her career, Dr. Horii has been deeply committed to enhancing the educational experience for students and faculty alike. Her teaching repertoire spans undergraduate and graduate-level courses on university teaching and learning in STEM fields, emphasizing inclusive and equity-minded practices. Additionally, she has undertaken extensive research on topics such as the impact of teaching centers on institutional change, faculty experiences with disabilities, and effective teaching consultation methods.
Prior to her role at Stanford, Dr. Horii held key leadership positions at institutions such as Caltech and Curry College. At Caltech, she served as the Assistant Vice Provost and Founding Director of the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Outreach, where she spearheaded initiatives to promote evidence-based teaching methodologies across disciplines.
Dr. Horii's influence extends beyond her institutional roles; she is actively engaged in national conversations on undergraduate STEM education reform as a member of the National Academies Roundtable on Systemic Change. Moreover, her dedication to advancing teaching and learning excellence is evident through her past presidency of the POD Network in Higher Education.
